Jason Spezza was the hero of the night for the Ottawa Senators, leading his team to a 3-2 win against the Blue Jackets Tuesday night in Columbus.
With less than 5 minutes to go in the game, number 19 took advantage of the traffic in front of goalie Curtis McElhinney’s net to score the game winning goal as Ottawa was playing with a man advantage.
Spezza also added an assist, his 23rd of the season, in the winning cause
On his side, Stéphane Da Costa was the first on the scoreboard with his two first goal of the season. This was also his first 2 goal game in career for the Parisian.
Called up recently by the big team, Da Costa led his team to a two goal lead in the two first period of the game, which one was scored on a power play.
Ottawa then showed some indiscipline and the locals took advantage.
Cam Atkinson reduced the lead to one in the second period on a power play goal. He also added an assist on the fifth goal of James Wiesniewski’s season, which also had a two point game.
Craig Anderson was brilliant in nets stopping 34 of 36 shots he faced.
His opponent, Curtis McElhinney, finished the night with 25 saves.
This win allowed the Sens to stop their losing streak to two. They will be back home Thursday night when they will host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Cody Ceci wins his bet
Cody Ceci can now breathe. Sens management announced to him that he will stay with the team until the end of the season.
The young defenseman had learned about this news earlier. He had been announced this when Ottawa was in Nashville January 11th.
Picked by the Sens in the first round (15th overall) in 2012, Ceci was called up with the big team December 12th 2013, also playing his first NHL career game that same night.
Since, he has never been sent back to play in Binghamton.
In 21 games, Ceci has one goal and four assists. He had scored his first career goal in his third game of the season. A goal which he scored in overtime in a 3-2 win against the St-Louis Blues December 16th in Ottawa.
